North Aegean Sailing Area

The access to our area is either by car or by plain. There are 2 airports offering many flights. The one in Kavala is only 20 minutes drive from the town. The other in Thessalonica is 80 minutes drive with the new motorway.

Starting your sailing trip from Kavalas port you have many options depending on the days that you plan to sail. In general there are the following options:

Kavala

Except of the really beautiful Kavalas port where are the permanent anchorages from the boats, you can spent a night in Iraklitsa little harbor (6 miles west) and Keramoti fishing harbor which is 15 miles east, very close to Nestos river delta to the sea. Also on the main land coasts you can spend your day swimming in many bays and also on 2 small islands which are Fidonissi and Thassopoula.

Thassos

The shortest spot from Kavala is 12 miles. In general there is one marina in the capital from the north side (free of charge), 3 more nice fishing harbors and many excellent protected bays to anchor also for the night. Thassos is a realy nice island full of pine and olive trees until the sea. The mainland villages also worthy to visit.

Lemnos

This is 40 miles south from the south port of Thassos called Limenaria. The capital called Myrina is really nice with very friendly people. Going there better stay on the west –south side where are the best anchorages. Limnos has very good food 30% cheaper than in Kavala.

Samothraki

This island is 38 miles west from Thassos capital. The unique nature with the water fallings and the 35 small “vathres”(small lakes) coming from the high mountain is something you will not forget. Don’t forget to eat local lamb on the grill or in the oven.

Chalkidiki

The 3 peninsulas west from Kavala are full of nice spots and there are also 3 marinas to stay. The western peninsula, closer to Kavala is a kind of separated country, where are only monasteries not aloud to visit by boat.

Agios Efstratios

This is a small island 18 miles south from Limnos. There is only one village with 200 people living and one taverna. Not bad if you are looking for something really different!

Sporades Islands

For more days of chartering you can visit Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and 4 more smaller islands. The closer one to Thassos is 80 miles ( or 40 from Limnos)

Weather patterns in north Aegean

In Thassos and mainland costs the sea conditions are usually light, no more than 5B. The direction is E but after midday there are thermal winds SW up to 4B, excellent for sailing.

East from Thassos, sailing to Samothraki sometimes the wind rises up to 7B from East. Its good to get a weather forecast before you start your sail there. South from Thassos the wind direction changes gradually from east to north. Sometimes in Limnos i had to stay 3 days in order to sail back to Thassos.

The web site www.meteo.gr is very reliable at least for the next 2 days.
